All School Service Project Supports WaterStep

Although Mother Nature kept us from being in the school throughout Catholic Schools Week, our students, faculty, staff and families continued the planned service project to support WaterStep.

WaterStep is an organization with a mission to provide clean water to those in need. The organization has changed more than 15 million lives in 72 countries through more than 5,000 projects with safe water and hope. The way they go about this is collecting old, worn shoes and selling the rubber for recycling or even selling the used shoes to be refurbish for use in countries whose residents are in need of shoes. From the funds they receive for the old shoes, they are helping areas by providing access to clean water – whether it is a country that needs assistance providing opportunities for clean water or after a natural disaster where water lines are disrupted for a period of time.

The SJS community donated nearly 500 pairs of shoes to support this community service project and we were thrilled to be a part of the effort. Once the shoes were collected, our Jr. Beta club met after school on two different days to help gather, pair and box all of the shoes so they would be ready to be delivered to WaterStep next week. There is a photo gallery below of our Jr. Beta Club at work.

Many thanks to all of those who contributed to this project. We teach our students daily about the value of stewardship to others and it is wonderful for them to witness how our entire Catholic community comes together to model that stewardship.
