Alumni Spotlight: Mason and Landon (Class of 2020)

From Childhood Friends to Tennis Champions and Beyond

For SJS Alumni Mason Baldwin and Landon Hagan, the story of their friendship began as neighbors and in the 3-year-old preschool class at Saint James Catholic School.

SJS was more than just a school for Mason and Landon; it was a place that shaped their character and values. Landon reflects, “Saint James has taught me loyalty, hard work, humility, how to help those in need, and how to build strong relationships. It kept me close to my faith.” Mason added, “SJS taught me skills beyond academics, like manners, respect, etiquette, and it deepened my faith.” The holistic education of SJS prepared them for the challenges ahead, both in academics and on the tennis court, a sport that furthered their bond.

Mason and Landon’s passion for tennis was nurtured early on. Mason was introduced to the sport by his grandad, David Rogers, and Landon by his parents. Their dedication and hard work to the sport paid off with impressive accomplishments during their careers:

4 Team Region Championships
3 Doubles Region Championships
An undefeated regional record of 31-0 in doubles
Three-time Doubles State Quarterfinalists (a school record)
2022 4th Place as a team in State
2023 Runner-Up as a team in State (a school record)

Mason and Landon have thrived on and off the court. Mason maintained a 4.0 GPA from SJS through high school while being active in multiple clubs, and achieved a 35 on his ACT. Landon also excelled, maintaining a 3.9 GPA while participating in Pep Club, FBLA, Beta Club, and volunteering with Feeding America, Kentucky’s Heartland.

One of Mason’s favorite SJS memories is when the pair planned, wrote, and presented a bill at the Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA) convention in Louisville, successfully getting it passed at the state level.

Now, the duo will transition to the University of Kentucky this fall as roommates, continuing to support each other as they embark on new challenges and adventures.

To current SJS students, Mason advises, “Appreciate the experiences you get at SJS because you do not realize how special the school is until you have graduated.” Landon adds, “Keep the values that SJS teaches you, stay true to your path, and maintain a positive mindset.”

Mason and Landon’s journey from childhood friends to accomplished young adults is a testament to the power of friendship, hard work, and the enduring impact of an SJS education beyond our classroom walls.
