Building Bonds, Sharing Stories: Jr. Beta Club Returns to the Veterans Home

Today, our St. James Catholic School Jr. Beta Club members returned to the Carl M. Brashear Veterans Center in Radcliff for another special visit, and our growing connection with the residents continues to blossom into something truly beautiful.

This visit gave our students the opportunity to sit down in small groups and interview the residents, learning more about their military careers, family lives, personal experiences, and the wisdom they have gained along the way. When asked what advice they would share with today’s students, one theme came up again and again: discipline and the importance of education. These conversations gave our students a meaningful glimpse into the lives of those who have served our country and the lessons that remain valuable across generations.

The room was filled with chatter, laughter, and genuine connection. A few tears were even shed, both by students and residents, as stories were shared and bonds began to deepen. It was a beautiful reminder that while our students came to learn about the residents, they were also building friendships and creating memories that will stay with them long after the visit ended.

After the interviews, everyone enjoyed pizza together, giving the conversations a chance to continue in a more relaxed setting. We even had a little talent to share! Aeson Gordon, a sixth-grade student, treated everyone to piano music, while Janslee Wilkins, a seventh-grade student, shared her beautiful voice in song. These special moments brought even more joy to an already memorable day.

And this is just the beginning! We are looking forward to welcoming some of our new friends to St. James in a few weeks for our Veterans Day program on November 12. As we plan future visits, exciting ideas are already beginning to take shape. From crafting and games to the possibility of a talent show, our students are discovering all the wonderful ways we can spend time together and continue building these relationships.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to connect our students with these veterans and to learn from the stories, sacrifices, and experiences they have to share. What began as a visit is growing into something much more meaningful—a relationship built on respect, kindness, shared stories, and friendship.

At St. James, we believe some of life’s most important lessons are learned when we take the time to listen to one another. Today, our Jr. Beta Club members did just that, and we cannot wait to see how this beautiful relationship continues to grow!
