Saint James Catholic School students selected as Season of Creation poster contest winners

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. – St. James Catholic School (SJS) in Elizabethtown has announced that two SJS students were selected as winners of the 2024 Season of Creation Poster Contest, hosted by the Archdiocese of Louisville’s Creation Care Team. Isabella Davis won first place in the contest for the Grades 3-5 category and Clara Groh won first place for Grades 6-8. Both students were awarded with a $150 prize.

The contest was open to Pre/K-8 Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Louisville. It is held annually to honor The Season of Creation, which is observed from Sept. 1 until the Feast of St. Francis on Oct. 4. The 2024 poster theme was “All creatures are connected,” which is taken from the encyclical, “Laudato Si,’’ by Pope Francis: “Because all creatures are connected, each must be cherished with love and respect, for all of us as living creatures are dependent on one another.”

The awards were presented at a reception following the first annual Archdiocesan Green Mass on Wednesday evening at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Louisville. Student winners in three different grade categories, including K-2, 3-5 and 6-8, were selected. Grades 3-5 and 6-8 both had first, second and third place winners, while one winner per school was selected in the K-2 category. Posters were judged on the criteria of originality, creativity, communication of the year’s theme and visual appeal.

“We are incredibly proud of Isabella and Clara for earning first-place honors and showcasing their creativity in capturing the essence of the Season of Creation,” said SJS art teacher Alex Barnett. “At SJS, our faculty and staff are dedicated to helping each student reach their full potential and develop their unique gifts. We are fortunate to have such talented students as part of our community, and their accomplishments reflect the supportive, nurturing environment we strive to maintain every day.”
